Going to State…….U12 Boys C2 - "Hornets"
Thursday, July 21, 2011
Congratulations to the U12 C2 boys. We finished the season 12-0 as league winners and beat a very strong Blaine team 4-2 in the league playoffs. The championship game was played on one of the hottest days on record and it was very tough to stay focused when the weather is that nasty. Blaine came out strong and caught us off-guard with an early goal. That was a real wake up call. From then on it was go time. Zach Wiegman and Gabe Gilbertson both scored in the first half of play to end the half with a 2-1 lead. Blaine scored the tying goal within 5 minutes of the start of the second half. The game went back and forth in the second half and then Blake Doyea sped up the wing, cut back and drilled the game winning shot from 20 yards out in the upper corner. With less than 5 minutes to play Zach Weigman scored on a sensational header off a beautiful corner kick from Erik Elvig to finish the game. What a great team accomplishment these young men have achieved. Again, and honor and privilege to coach these young men. From Mark Hager, Allen Berg and myself….well done team.

U10 NLSC Strikers are League Champions
Wednesday, July 6th, 2011
What a great accomplishment for the u-10 Girls Maroon Striker! This is their first year as a maroon team. I personally would like to thank them for a difficult, well fought, intense, and successful season. These girls went undefeated in league play with 44 goals for and only 7 against. Including tournaments they scored 77 goals. All of the girl’s playing levels have improved DRAMATICALLY since their season tryouts, and they had a ton of fun. Great season girls and good luck at u-11!

U12 NLSC Hornets Win the Moonlight Classic Tournament
Monday, June 13, 2011
This was a great run by a really talented NLS team. We were matched in intensity and ability throughout the tournament and it was an absolute thrill to be there with this team. Our first game against Sioux City Select ended in a 3-1 loss and afterwards the opposing coach congratulated us and said we out played his team but was thankful to have held on to the victory. We then came back for our midnight game under the lights and beat a very strong Waverly team. Our last game was against the host team, Cedar Valley Select, and we ended up winning that game 4-3. All three teams in our pool had the same record but we had the best ’goals against’ average amongst the teams and we advanced to the championship game.
In the championship game we pressured really hard and finished the half with a 1-0 lead on a goal by Tracy Hager. The second half the Euro FC team came out firing and after 15 minutes of play had taken a 2-1 lead and looked strong. We rallied for another goal to tie the game with 8 minutes left to play when Erik Elvig crossed the ball and Miguel Martinez headed in the cross off the post to even up the game. Both teams missed opportunities to win as time winded down.
The game went immediately to a penalty shoot-out with the winner taking home the championship. Jake Peterson, our goalie, made two phenomenial diving saves and then took the last and final ’fifth shot’ to win the tournament for the team. A great team win and an unbelievable tournament run for our guys. A huge thanks to the parents and kids who made the trip to Waterloo, IA. A weekend that will be remembered for many years to come.

U10 Maroon Strikers go undefeated at Head of Lakes tournament in Duluth!
Monday, June 13th, 2011
The u-10 maroon Strikers had a fantastic weekend at the Head of Lakes tournament in Duluth. Their first game against Gitchi Gummi resulted in an 11-0 victory. The second against East Side Select resulted in another 11-0 victory.
The final game against CC United was probably the most exciting u-10 game I have seen in my time as a coach. Both teams were extremely skilled both individually and as a team. Additionally, the physical play was remarkable. Though there were a few key plays that transpired into the game’s only goal, the entire Strikers team efforts brought them to victory.
Abby Johnson on defense made a 110% effort to get the ball just a half a step outside the attackers reach. Abby then made a great pass to Monty Bertolas up the side of the field. Monty then dribbled in to about 5 yards from the CC united goal. She could have continued dribbling, shot the ball, or make a pass to the far post. Monty made the pass to the far post where Jazmyn Gray was making (what seemed to be) a 100 mph run. Jazmyn Gray tapped the ball into the net for the game winning goal.
What was most amazing to me (though the entire play was great) was that Monty made the decision to make that pass. Most at that age/level would have tried to dribble past the goalie or take a shot straight at the goalie. Great decision, great result, fantastic effort!
Great job Strikers!
