Are you looking forward to the snow melting so your child can play again outside?  Does he or she want to get a head start on the summer season?  Northern Lights Soccer Club is offering a winter Rec program for players to get some exercise, have some fun, and become a better soccer player. The Winter Little Lights program for 2012 runs from January to February.  Players will get to be part of a new, exciting winter soccer program which emphasizes fun, creativity, and individual player development.  The program is led by Michael O’Reilly (Northern Lights S.C. Director of Coaching and Player Development) who holds, along with many other coaching licenses, the National Youth Coaching License.  Players will become more comfortable and confident with the ball, improving their ability to be more creative and positive playing soccer.  Parents will also be given weekly activities they can do at home or at the gym with their children.

Minnesota Concussion Law and MYSA Concussion Policy
July 12, 2011

This past legislative session, a bill was passed and signed into law regarding concussions and youth athletes.  Minnesota has joined a growing number of states that have passed laws on providing concussion information, training and procedures to be followed for youth athletes to return to play.  The law is effective as of September 1st, 2011.

To see a copy of the statute please click here.

To see a copy of the MYSA Concussion Policy please click here.

What is a concussion?

The Minnesota legislation requires any municipality, business, school district or nonprofit organization that organizes a youth athletic activity and charges a fee to follow the statute’s requirements.

NLSC would like to point out several things:

  • The statute applies to all practices and games.
  • Even though the statute does not officially take effect until September 1, the online training is available now.  NLSC strongly recommends that coaches and officials start the CDC training ASAP.  There is a certificate to print out to show completion of the course at the end.  Print it out as proof.
  • This statute applies to all clubs in Minnesota.  As noted in the policy, each club will have to adopt its own policy.
  • Any Extraterritorial coach or player who plays in any game or tournament in Minnesota is also affected.  Coaches will have to take the online training and both coaches and players have to follow the removal/return to play requirements anytime they are in Minnesota.
  • The statute takes effect on September 1, 2011, which happens to correspond with the MYSA soccer year; it will be in effect for the Fall Season.
  • The statute and policy is NOT limited to competitive players, coaches and officials; Rec and Rec-Plus are also affected.
  • This affects all sports, not just soccer.

Weather Cancellation Policy
Recreational Soccer Weather Cancellation
Please keep our weather policy in mind throughout the season; the hotline number listed below will only be updated for weather if there is a change in policy or if weather cancellations occur. Rain-outs will be announced on the hotline by 5:00pm the day of the session.  If there is not a hotline message canceling the scheduled session, you should come to the fields because the weather is too questionable to predetermine cancellation.

It is important to note that we will not cancel sessions prior to the scheduled session time due to weather unless it is obvious that the severe weather will interfere throughout the entire night.  If the fields have a lot of standing water on them from raining all day, the sessions will be cancelled.  At the Recreational Soccer level, cancelled sessions are not rescheduled, they are just not played.

ARAA Sports Hotline (763) 422-9555; Press 6 for Soccer, then Press 1 for Recreational Soccer

If there is not a current message you are to assume the games will be played as scheduled.

Traveling Soccer Weather Cancellation
All weather related game cancellations will be determined at the field prior to game time.
